Digital Media Student Launches Multimedia Design Company

Digital Media Student Diamond Perkins wrote her first book at nine years old and her second at 16. Last quarter, she made the president’s honor roll, and this past week she launched a multimedia design company, DAML, which stands for “Diamonds Are My Love.” She does website and logo design, as well as content creation and social media management. Her ultimate goal is to be a TV screenwriter and director. We caught up with this talented student to learn more.

Why FIDM and how did you choose your major? My mom and I were looking for schools and we saw a few ads about FIDM. When we looked through the website, I knew it was the perfect fit. And I knew Digital Media was the right major for me after taking the Career Quiz and it held everything I wanted to do.

What are some of the highlights of the Digital Media program: Last quarter I took a screenwriting class and I absolutely fell in love with it. I had already been interested in screenwriting and the class put everything in perspective for me. Plus, I have two scripts written now.

Tell us a little about yourself: I’m 19 years old, I’ve written two books—one when I was nine years old and the other when I was sixteen. I love school and learning as much information as I can. I’m a Christian and I frequently volunteer in my church’s media ministry.

What is one of your proudest accomplishments? One of my proudest accomplishments would have to be getting the president’s honor roll last quarter. I wanted to give my all into these classes and seeing those grades at the end of the quarter made me so happy.

Tell us about your business you just launched. How long have you been working on it and how are you promoting it? The business I just launched is called DAML, which stands for DiamondsAreMyLove (also my Instagram handle). It is a multimedia design company that helps businesses with identity assets like website and logo design as well as content creation and social media management. I’ve been working on my business for two years now, I initially started as a freelancer. I’m promoting on social media, using Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. I plan to spread to YouTube as well.

What are your career goals and how is FIDM helping you get there? I would love to screen write and direct for television and streaming services. FIDM is helping me get there by teaching me the skills I’ll need as well as the opportunities they have through the Career Center.

Who would you say is your biggest mentor in guiding you to achieve your goals? My mother is my biggest mentor. From day one she has always made things make sense and helped me get to where I want to be. My cousin inspired me a lot and taught me videography and photography. My mother instilled the graphic design elements and pushed me out of my comfort zone with everything I did.

What advice do you have for someone who is unsure about what steps they need to take to achieve their goals? My advice would be to look at the steps of those who are where you want to be and start where they started, but also know that you can’t rush it either. It’s also okay to not know every aspect or have it all planned out, because you can get caught up in the details and the idea of perfection. Also, find some people you trust who can support and critique you.
